My Week of Essential Oil Use with a Spotlight on Oil Pulling

Although I have many habits and routines that involve essential oils, every day is different depending on how I’m feeling that particular day, and what my body needs. Many of the uses involve natural solutions to every day issues, rather that specific chronic illness support. However, I feel happier that using natural solutions is minimising the toxic load my body has to deal with, which for me, is an important aspect of managing ME/CFS.

What is oil pulling and why do I do it?

Oil pulling is a bit like an extended mouthwash using a base oil and a couple of drops of essential oils. You swish the oil around your mouth for about 20 minutes with the aim of pulling out toxins. I started doing it because of being told by my dentist that I had early signs of gum disease. As soon as I get up in the morning I put a couple of drops of essential oils in a desert spoon of olive oil and start swishing it around in my mouth while I do my Tai chi warm up.  It’s important to spit it out and not swallow because the oil should be absorbing the toxins that have built up overnight in your mouth. Spit it out in a bin and not down the sink as it can easily block up your plumbing. I then clean my teeth and finish with a salt water mouthwash.
