With illnesses like ME/CFS we have to be careful about how we chose to entertain ourselves. I recently read a highly acclaimed and quite wonderful book which had me feeling miserable for weeks, and when you have to live with the challenge of chronic illness it just isn’t worth it. It’s hard to find entertainment the is gentle and uplifting so when I do I like to share.
This is another of the books I got from my library’s health section recommended by cancer patients for their uplifting easy-going content.
Saving CeeCee Honeycut by Beth Hoffman
Entertainment: 5/5 Low stimulation rating: 4.5/5
When I started to read this book, I was a little disappointed. The first couple of chapter describe the painful reality of a 12-year-old girl left to take care of her bipolar mother. It didn’t lift my mood at all, but before long it turned around completely.
This is a story about love and healing. After her mother dies, CeeCee moves into the grand home of her great aunt. She becomes close friends with her aunt’s housekeeper and finally has the space to enjoy her childhood.
CeeCee is offered unconditional love from a variety of sources. At first, she shuts her past away to make the most of enjoying the here and now, but before the end of her school holidays she is encouraged to confront the deep well of grief within her, not only for her mother’s death, but also for the loss of the mother she had before mental illness hit and the loss of her childhood.
The setting for the story is described beautifully and the plot twists make it a fun and interesting read.
If you need entertaining whilst energy and mood is low, persist through the first couple of chapter and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it! It’s easy to read and filled with life affirming messages!
Have you read this book? How would you rate it as entertainment? Would you rate it as low stimulation? Is it something you’d recommend for making rest more enjoyable?
If you’d like to write a review for some low stimulation entertainment I’d love to share it as a guest blog post (email info@themecfsholisticcoach.com), or perhaps you could share you recommendations in the comments and I could check it out and review it myself!
A small favour: I’d be very grateful if you could rate this post using the stars below the related posts. Thank you!
I go for light Regency romances when things are tough. Very soothing and great escapism.
Yes, I’m a bit of a fan of Mary Burlogh! They’re usually pretty gentle!
